Monstera Obliqua Peru - Peruvian Obliqua | The Legendary Fenestrated Aroid

Monstera obliqua Peru is one of the most extraordinary and sought-after aroids in cultivation. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, this remarkable climbing species is renowned for its incredibly delicate foliage and extreme fenestration. Unlike most Monstera species, the leaves of Monstera obliqua Peru often consist of more open space than actual leaf tissue, creating an appearance unlike almost any other plant in the botanical world.

For years, true Monstera obliqua Peru has been surrounded by fascination among collectors. It is frequently confused with Monstera adansonii, yet the differences become immediately apparent once a genuine specimen is observed. The leaves are significantly thinner, more delicate, and dramatically perforated, giving the plant an almost lace-like appearance. This unique morphology has earned Monstera obliqua Peru a reputation as one of the most iconic collector plants of the modern aroid hobby.

At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, Monstera obliqua Peru is appreciated not only for its rarity and beauty but also for its fascinating biology. When cultivated correctly, it develops into an elegant climbing plant that rewards attentive growers with some of the most spectacular foliage found within the genus Monstera.

Why This Plant Stands Out

• One of the most distinctive Monstera species in existence

• Extremely perforated foliage with extraordinary fenestration

• Highly sought-after among serious aroid collectors

• Delicate, lace-like leaves unlike those of Monstera deliciosa or Monstera adansonii

• Elegant climbing growth habit

• Produces characteristic stolons that aid natural propagation

• Genuine botanical rarity compared to common houseplant Monsteras

• A fascinating example of rainforest adaptation

• Cultivated for exceptional foliage rather than flowers

• Grown with a focus on long-term health and robust root development

Plant Characteristics

Botanical name: Monstera obliqua Peru

Common name: Peruvian Obliqua

Plant type: Tropical climbing aroid

Growth: Climbing and creeping, producing stolons and slender stems

Foliage: Extremely thin, highly fenestrated leaves with exceptional perforation

Flowers: Typical Monstera inflorescence consisting of spadix and spathe on mature specimens

Special features: Extreme leaf fenestration, delicate foliage texture, highly collectible status

Use: Collector plant, climbing aroid, tropical indoor plant, greenhouse cultivation, rare plant collections

Collector Note

Few plants have generated as much discussion among aroid enthusiasts as Monstera obliqua Peru. For many years, the species was regarded as one of the ultimate collector plants, partly due to its rarity and partly because genuine specimens were often confused with Monstera adansonii.

A simple comparison illustrates why collectors value it so highly. While Monstera adansonii develops attractive perforations within relatively sturdy leaves, Monstera obliqua Peru produces extraordinarily delicate foliage where the openings can occupy the majority of the leaf surface. The result is a plant that appears almost skeletal in structure yet remains remarkably elegant.

Collectors also appreciate the species for its fascinating growth behaviour. Healthy plants frequently produce elongated stolons, allowing them to spread naturally and create new growth points. This characteristic contributes to both its botanical interest and its desirability among dedicated growers.

For serious aroid collectors, Monstera obliqua Peru represents one of the most remarkable expressions of natural leaf evolution within the Araceae family.

Care

Light:
Bright indirect light is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can damage the delicate foliage.

Watering:
Keep the substrate lightly and consistently moist. Allow slight drying between waterings, but never permit the root zone to remain completely dry for extended periods.

Humidity:
High humidity is strongly recommended. Levels above 70% support optimal growth and leaf development.

Temperature:
Best cultivated between 20–30°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Substrate:
A highly permeable, airy organic substrate is essential. Excellent drainage combined with moisture retention creates the ideal balance for healthy roots.

Maintenance:
Provide a climbing support such as a moss pole, tree fern fibre, or natural bark. Regular inspection and good air circulation help maintain healthy growth.

Additional cultivation tips:
Treat Monstera obliqua Peru as a tropical rainforest climber rather than a standard houseplant. Consistent humidity, stable warmth, and an airy substrate are the keys to success. When these conditions are met, the species can grow surprisingly well and become increasingly rewarding over time.

Cultivated with Care at TOMs FLOWer CLUB

At TOMs FLOWer CLUB, we believe that exceptional plants deserve exceptional cultivation.

Our Monstera obliqua Peru specimens are grown according to our philosophy of quality before quantity. We avoid intensive mass-production methods and excessive fertilisation, focusing instead on steady, healthy growth and strong root development.

Plants are cultivated in a carefully prepared self-mixed permeable organic substrate designed specifically for tropical aroids. This approach promotes vigorous roots, healthy foliage, and long-term vitality rather than temporary cosmetic growth.

Where possible, plants originate from our own collection and propagation efforts, ensuring authenticity, traceability, and confidence for collectors seeking genuine material.

The result is a robust, well-established plant prepared for long-term success in its new home.

What You Receive

You receive the plant shown in the photographs - round 20-50cm long or a specimen of comparable size and quality unless otherwise stated.

Each Monstera obliqua Peru is carefully selected before shipment and supplied as a healthy, established plant growing in our self-mixed permeable organic substrate.

Our goal is not simply to sell a rare plant, but to provide a specimen capable of thriving and developing into an exceptional collector's plant for years to come.

KEEPS MY ENERGETIC 1 YR OLD LAB BUSY
Size: Large
Anyone that has a field Lab knows you have to keep them busy which is difficult with the snow that won’t melt and the unusual -15 degree windchills we are having in NYC. Like others I’ve wasted so much money on various toys and puzzles trying to keep her busy and mentally stimulated. She either destroys them in minutes or won’t touch them. However, these with treats inside are fantastic. She loves the chicken flavor treats that go inside the ball. The treats for the holder are pricey but worth it so it keeps her busy for a while and she doesn’t get super hyper with cabin fever. Once I can get her back outside for longer periods to play and run off her excess energy I probably won’t be buying them on a regular basis given the price and that they only last a couple of hours given her strong jaws….Probably only for a special treat. However, for now they are worth every penny. The only con is they are difficult to get into the holder which is good so she can’t remove it.

We love em!
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
My dog loves these! I get a size smaller so it’s harder for him to eat. He’s 70lbs I get him the medium and it will last him 4 ish days. I also fuill the back with dog safe peanut butter, broken treats, and his food. This keeps him happy while I’m at work :) for reference he’s a gsd, and Australian shepherd mix. He never lets it get too far away, and proudly carries it along even when empty. He had one for over a year that just now started to break. They are very strong, great for chewers, and worth their weight in gold! When empty they also make them have the funniest faces🤣 again my dog had the first one for over a year before it started to rip. They are hardy.

Wrong item sent
Size: Small, Size: Small
The bento ball itself is great but the extra 16 treats that were sent as part of the purchase were the wrong kind. The picture used in the Amazon ad is the one shown in the left part of the picture I posted (dome shaped treats with a dog named Lacey in the picture), and what I received is shown in the right part of the picture (ridged treats with a dog named Bella in the picture). The problem with the Bella treats is that they are a bit smaller than the Lacey treats which means that they dont fit sugly into the bento ball. This in turn means that my little maltipoo gets them out of the bento ball in a few minutes. This defeats the whol purpose of the treat, and even worse this is a choking hazard for small dogs which makes the product unusable for me. FYI - I have never had this problem with the Lacey treats - they work great which is why I bought this product since this is what was shown in the picture. I sent a message to the vendor about this but have not heard anything back. Amazon offered to refund me half of the total purchase price if I sent back both the ball and the 7 of the 8 treat packages (I opened one only to discover this problem), which is also not great.

Fun, but short lived. Not tough enough for hard chewers
Size: Medium
Great idea. Wish it was tougher. My dog gets the branded treats out in ten minutes, and then destroys the ball in 30 minutes.

Best for my dogs
I’ve tried several coffee wood sticks for my dogs and these are by far the only ones they’ve liked and actually kept going back to! I have a terrier mix and a Pomeranian and both of them share it frequently!
